The biomechanics

FLEXIBILITY vs STRENGTH REALITY

1. LIGAMENT LAXITY: Ligament yang loose = joint stability berkurang

Range of motion tinggi tanpa muscle control = risky

2. PASSIVE vs ACTIVE FLEXIBILITY:

Passive: bisa masuk pose extreme dengan bantuan gravity/prop

Active: bisa masuk pose extreme tanpa bantuan, dengan strength

   Yang healthy = active flexibility

3. HYPERMOBILITY SPECTRUM:

~15% populasi (higher in females + Asian descent)

Bukan berkat · condition yang perlu dilindungi dengan strength

The 3 drills

Drill 1 · End-Range Isometric Holds

  • Masuk ke stretch position (contoh: forward fold)

  • Di posisi max stretch, aktifin muscle sekitar joint (10-30% effort)

  • Hold 20-30 detik dengan tension aktif

  • Ini teach nervous system untuk STABILIZE di range

  • 3 pose per session · 3 sets per pose

Drill 2 · Eccentric Loading

  • Slow lowering ke stretch (10-15 detik masuk)

  • Hold di bottom 3-5 detik

  • Slow return (5-10 detik keluar)

  • Contoh: slow lower ke splits, hold, slow up

  • Bangun strength di range yang biasa passive

Drill 3 · Active Mobility Assessment

  • Test: masuk pose tanpa bantuan gravity atau prop

  • Cek: bisa hold 30 detik dengan control?

  • Kalau tidak · itu passive flexibility, bukan usable

  • Latih active version dulu sebelum push passive further

Practice schedule

4-WEEK PROTOCOL

Week 1: Beighton score assessment · self-assess hypermobility

Week 2: Introduce end-range holds · 3x per minggu

Week 3: Add eccentric loading · alternate with end-range

Week 4: Active mobility test · adjust practice based on findings

Indicators of progress

  • Joint feels "held" bukan "loose"

  • Bisa hold end-range tanpa fatigue rapid

  • Less clicking or popping di joints

  • Injury frequency turun (terutama minor tweaks)

  • Body feels supported saat stretching

When to seek professional help

  • Chronic joint pain persistent

  • Beighton score 6+ (severe hypermobility)

  • History of dislocations or subluxations

  • Consultation dengan pelvic floor PT atau sports medicine
